Lakeside 2001
We arrived at Lakeside on Friday evening and after having our tea, were introduced to Johan, our group leader for the weekend. We then set off on the "Treasure Hunt", our first activity. Although we didn't manage to find all our clues, we found this an ideal opportunity to explore the site and find our way around. When we finished, all the children received a share of the treasure out of the chest - some sweets.
On Saturday morning we split into two groups, each provided with safety helmets and paddles ready to go canoeing. One group went in a large canoe and the other split into pairs to go in open canoes. Our family all chose to go in the open canoes. First we were taught a few basic canoeing skills, then played one or two games, (we never knew there were sharks in Windermere) we then set off on a trip up the lake. We played more games - throwing wet sponges at each other and other equally wet games and then set off back to Lakeside for lunch. During the return journey one or two of our group members took an unexpected dip in the lake when their canoes capsized - with or without assistance from other canoes!
After a change of clothes and a well-earned lunch we prepared for the raft race, yet another very wet activity! We were divided into three groups and each was provided with ropes, poles and large plastic drums with which to make a raft. With the help and advice of our three instructors the rafts were finally ready for launching and the start of the race. The race went very well and was enjoyed by all, with plenty of cheating and wetting of other teams. It was eventually decided that all three teams were winners - all for different reasons of course!
Next, although not on our agenda, was the aerial cableway or zip-line. Many of the children (and some big kids) once they spotted the tower at the start of the zip-line, asked Johan if they could have a go.
Nothing being too much trouble for Johan, he kindly agreed to set up the zip-line and provided everyone with safety harnesses and helmets.
